How do I add smart quotes to my book?

Professionally typeset books should use “curly” quotation marks, also referred to as smart quotes:

If you’ve used smart quotes in your manuscript, Vellum will maintain them on import.

Applying Smart Quotes to a Single Chapter

If you find text in your book that still has straight quotes, you can select this text in the editor and then use the Apply Smart Quotes command, available from the Transformations menu:

This will find any straight quotes in the selected text and use the Smart Quotes system to convert these to the appropriate curled version.

Applying Smart Quotes to an Entire Book

If you find straight quotes throughout your book, you can replace them with smart quotes using the Find and Replace tool. When you enter one straight quote in the Find field and another in the Replace field, Smart Quotes will be used on replacement:

Note: Make sure Smart Quotes are enabled before you make the replacement.

My book uses Smart Quotes, but they don’t appear in Vellum’s Preview.

Vellum’s live Preview will show your quotes exactly as they appear in your book. Note, though, that straight and smart quotes can appear differently with different fonts. To illustrate this, here is a screenshot of smart quotes in two different fonts:

If you’re having trouble seeing curled quotes in the Preview of your ebook, you can use the Device Settings to view using a different font.
