Yes! Ebooks generated by Vellum meet basic accessibility requirements, including those laid out by the European Accessibility Act.
To ensure they meet best practices for accessibility, we also regularly check ebooks using the Ace set of tools from the DAISY Consortium.
Though much of Vellum’s accessibility output is automatic, for best results, we recommend that you:
- Check that elements in your book all have an accurate type.
- Check that any informational images in your book include a description for accessibility.
- Ensure any links you create are associated with meaningful text (e.g. use a title like “Author Website” rather than “Click Here”)
- Use EPUB3, as this format includes more accessibility information. Vellum’s store-specific files all use EPUB3. If you’ve changed Vellum’s Generic output to EPUB2, you can switch back to EPUB3 in Generation Settings.
Each vendor has its own set of questions about accessibility features. Our help pages provide guidance on how to respond to these questions for Apple and Amazon KDP.
You can learn more about Generation Settings in Vellum Help.
