This is the result of of a process known as justification, which ensures the right side of a column of text all lines up. Justification is performed by adding a small amount of space between each word on a line. Usually that amount of space isn’t noticeable, but it can be in some situations:
Note: For the most accurate view of your text, switch to Proof mode.
Hyphenation minimizes these spaces. So if you see larger-than-normal spaces between words, double-check to ensure hyphenation is enabled.
If you find a word Vellum hasn’t automatically hyphenated, you can fix this by inserting a soft hyphen. For instance, in the example above, the spacing within the phrase “At Gleeson’s corner he saw Hall, who had recently…” is a bit larger than normal. To fix this, add a soft hyphen to the word “married” by placing your cursor between “mar” and “ried” and selecting Edit > Special Characters > Soft Hyphen:
Most professionally-typeset books use justification, but if you prefer to disable it, you can do so in the Body Style Editor.
You can learn more about the Body Style Editor in Vellum Help.
